Business travel and Event travel to Portugal, why choose Portugal for your next event?

feature-business
Noticing that business travel,  group and event travel to Portugal seem to be growing at a fast rate for both the corporate business markets and the private event planners. We decided to explain certain aspects of group travel to Portugal that could be important for you when you plan such an occasion.

Why would you organize your event in Portugal

What makes Portugal so uniquely suitable for small, medium and large events?

For one the Portuguese climate. Portugal has a warm Mediterranean climate with on average 6 hours of sun per day. Its winters are mild and wet Its summers warm but cooled by pleasant sea breazes. Winters are relatively short whereas summers are relatively long.

Accessibility Portugal has 3 main airports spread strategically throughout the country. In the North, Porto is its main entry point, In the centre Lisbon, its capital has the main airport and south in the Algarve, Faro, the Algarvian capital, has the main airport. (*note Madeira and Azores also have airports and also are Portugal, we will be covering them soon also) All airports as of 2015 offer budget airlines as well as first class and business class travel.
The roads are structured by  the national highway plan of 2000 and in 2014-15 they where considered the best in Europe and second best in the world by World Economic Forum in its Global Competiveness Report of the same years.
From the main cities public transport networks provide transport throughout the entire country but are best around the coastline and to the main internal cities.
People visiting Portugal by cruise traffic is a fast growing new form of tourism mainly in Lisbon which is currently building a new cruise terminal right in the cities heart.

Cost Portugal is one of the cheapest European travel destination. Its prices for accommodation, restaurants and activities are well below the European average whereas in many cases the quality offered much above.

Heritage, landscapes, Monuments, Leisure activities, sports, gastronomy and wine, Portugal has a very diverse offer which can appeal to a very large group of tourism consumers with different preferences, budget and expectations.

Niches in tourism to Portugal

Adventure and active travel due to its climate, diverse landscapes and the long coastline, Portugal is particularly suited to active adventurous travel and there are many expert and licensed adventurers providing top quality sports in safe environments. From paragliding to surf, canyoneering, mountain climbing, biking, horse riding, boat activities and diving, almost anything you can think of is possible in Portugal.

Wine tourism The wine sector of Portugal is growing fast in recognition and Portugal produces many exceptional wines, that have been awarded internationally on many occasions.
The booming wine industry has created a new niche for travel, activities and accommodation on its wonderful wine manor house farms. Originally Portugal was home to the first Iberian vines and to this day it still produces wines based on unique processes and it is home to the only remaining fully European grape, the Ramisco grape.

Rural tourism Portugal shares a common problem with most of southern Europe and that is Urbanization and rural flight. Many villages have been abandoned or are almost empty, the land is no longer worked and mechanized processes have made agriculture less human resourceful, this has opened perspectives for a new type of tourism, namely rural tourism in which the Portuguese government  has invested with an eye to sustainability.
This has given birth to many amazing getaway retreats along the coast and in the mountainous landscapes of Central and Northern regions.

Cultural and heritage tourism with its incredible and rich history Portugal has been left with a high number of amazing heritage sites many of them Unesco recognized. It organizes many famous world known festivals and events and many local, traditional and lesser known events, from gastronomy to music, rural traditions, modern trends and wine.

Luxury tourism The last few years have given rise to many luxury hotels both 4 and 5 star and luxury resorts.
In 2015, this trend was topped by the Asian chain, 6 senses, which opened its first European resort in the Douro Valley.
Even before it opened, it had already managed full occupancy for the first 4 months after opening its doors to the public.

The Wellness and ecotourism markets With its clean waters, many nature reserves and healthy low pollution air, nature, natural thermes and springs, Portugal lends itself perfectly for health related travel and it has many possibilities in almost every price range to accommodate this type of travel.
Ecotourism and eco awareness are becoming more and more prominent in Portugal, which is already a leader in sustainable energy, and eco awareness has also reached the luxury market creating new forms of sustainability that could inspire the rest of the world.

Background and history of tourism in Portugal

Portugal has always been a favourite destination for many uk travellers. Lord Byron raved about his love for the country specifically the Sintra hills already in 1809, he spent much time there but so did many other English travellers always having had a special bond with Portugal declared in commercial treaties over the centuries that go back as far as 1373 and the port wine treaty of 1703 which brought many English traders to the Oporto region. In recent years Portugal has grown its tourism market exponentially under the guidance of the government agency Turismo de Portugal who have achieved, with great success, most of the goals set out to conquer the financial adversity that has been affecting the European tourism markets in the last few years.

Portugal has been winning many awards as best European travel destination and was chosen number 1 getaway among travel consumers various times in 2013, 2014 and 2015

The business and event travel markets are also picking up this trend at growing speed and more and more venues are capable and prepared to host larger groups and customized requests.

Taking into consideration

When it comes to group travel, depending of the size of the group and the type of events planned there are just a few things to take into consideration

Necessary Licenses for public events. For specific, larger events in public spaces, licenses will need to be requested.
Many small companies provide the best leisure activities but have limited capacity, generally its better to combine different activities when group sizes become to big.
Distance and accessibility of its best retreats. Travelling to rural retreats can be time consuming if the connections are not optimal, its always best to inform first, 40km on a bad road can take 3 times the time to arrive, than if you where doing the same distance on a good road.
Language. Even though most professional workers in Portugal will have at least a reasonable level of English, the average taxi driver, person on the street or supermarket assistance may not.

Types of events.

Convent of Sertã Hotel

Portugal has many niche travel markets that can cater to all kinds of needs and requests.

Offsite events or awayday / weekend events also known as offsite retreats are perfect in Portugal thanks to its many retreat locations, manor house farms, wine hotels, entire villages rehabilitated for tourism and luxury resorts either close to its 3 main airports or hidden in its beautiful landscapes, Portugal has many possibilities.

Team building events for corporations and groups. O escuro profundo oceano de RESERVAS ONLINE

O escuro profundo oceano de RESERVAS ONLINE
feature-ocean-250x160

Winter Vacation Portugal, let it work its miracles as you enjoy the peace, monuments, sports and views only winter can emphasize

Portugal out of season

Winter vacation or holiday in Portugal

To find the perfect Winter Vacation Portugal can be difficult if you don’t inform yourself properly or travel with the wrong expectations!

Most people travel to Portugal during the summertime when the weather is guaranteed warm and sunny 99% of the time, the nights are short, the days hot and the water either refreshing or when you swim in some of it’s inland lakes, warm.
Others travel in the winter and expect to find to same climate and activities they would in the summer and go home disillusioned.

Summertime in Portugal is a very special experience. It’s the enjoyment of heat and finding comforting shadow, escaping into it’s cools waters, sunbathing or shady relaxation and long luxurious evenings.
A summer vacation in Portugal is perfect for beach holidays, water sports and night strolling.

We provide travel planning services for groups, private and corporate events in Portugal!

Oranizing your event in Portugal with Go Discover Portugal

As tourism to Portugal is growing at a fast rate, even during the winter months, we would like to inform you how to have an amazing time in this country even out off season.

autumn - winter Tomar

The Climate

How you experience the climate is very much depending on where you come from coming from Northern Europe, Ireland, UK, Holland, Germany, Northern France, New York, Canada and comparible climates you will find the winters warm and generally you’ll drop your coat on arrival, coming from Africa, India and many other comparable climates, you’ll find them fresh and chilly.

The autumn still has many warm ‘summer’ days, magnificent skies and a green vibrant landscape. Flowers that died during the summer heat suddenly bloom all over and butterflies not seen much during august or September return in large amounts and many colours.

The depth of the winters are extreme (end December – and month of Januari) but mainly due to the varying temperatures each day has. Temperatures at night in the coldest months can occasionally go down to 1 or 2 degrees Celsius (33.5 F – 35.6 F)  but will generally reach between 17 C and 23 C degrees (62.6 F – 73.4 F) in the afternoon.

Christmas Santarem winter Vacation Portugal

Spring already has warm sunny days that can reach 26 – 28 degrees (78.8 F – 82.4 F).

‘Real Winter’ is very short mainly from half December to half February. Summer temperatures (above 30 degrees Celsius / 86 Fahrenheit) generally start around the beginning of may and last well into September.

In Portugal you will seldom find days that the climate forces you to stay inside other than the heat waves it can have during the hottest summer months and temperatures reach above 40 degrees celsius / 104 degrees fahrenheit.

Reasons to travel to Portugal at other times than the summer months.
To start of with during the other seasons, vacations and holidays in Portugal are much less busy due to the demise of tourism during these months so even the busiest tourist centres are quiet. The great monuments are yours, and the restaurant and hotel owner will receive you with open arms and have the time to serve you even better.

Some activities are best in winter!

Surfing, Rafting, hiking, climbing and many other activities are best in winter when the waves and rivers are higher and faster moving and the sun is less invasive!
Another great reason to travel to Portugal during these seasons is the climate, it’s much more giving to exploration and the landscape is much more beautiful, the light is softer and the traditions more real.
Not to forget that the west coast gets the highest surfing waves during the colder months!

All of this gives the opportunity for really enjoying both the cities and countryside.

Winter active!

Winter vacation Portugal lets you experience softer light, real traditions, more beautiful landscapes and honest attention from people that take the time

February central Portugal winter Vacation Portugal

The weather in the winter is quite unpredictable, some winters are dry and temperatures can reach, even in the coldest January month, 23 degree Celsius (73.4F) afternoons. Other winters are wet and sometimes stormy but temperatures are seldom lower that 18 degrees C (64.4F) in the afternoons and 2 – 6C (35.6F – 42.8F) at night this counts mainly for the end of December, the month of January and beginning of February which is the coldest period.

The North receives more rain than the south and the higher the grounds the lower the temperature. Surprisingly Santarem, Alentejo and the centre of Portugal has the highest average temperature during the winter months.

To take into consideration

Even though the days can be warm, the nights can be very cold and many places do not have heating, look for hotels with heating and fireplaces as they can give real comfort on the colder nights.
A lot of summer places close, don’t expect the same availability as you may have found during the summer months, many places will close completely or partially during the winter months.

So where do you go in the winter?

Some of the nicest winter escapes will take you to

Lisbon a really great city to visit at any time of year but it can rain 4-5 days without stopping demobilizing half the city, this happens almost every year once generally in October or April, any other time should be safe. Winter scene Tagus Vacation Portugal

Serra Estrella is the highest mountain range of the Portuguese mainland and it gets quite a bit of snow during the coldest winter months. It’s a great place to learn to ski as it scores very high on safe pistes, caring staf but it may not the best skiing destination for the advanced skiers.
In October it already reaches freezing temperatures and for those who didn’t come to ski, it’s a great place for amazing nature walks, incredible views seen from mountain cabins and spa hotels. The fireplaces you will find here in most buildings will make your experiences even more memorable.
Most of the snow you’ll find end of December to beginning march.
For winter sport it is relatively expensive and not a budget winter holiday, but the towns, villages, and Portuguese mountains could make it more than worthwhile. One hour drive down the mountain will take you into a much more native Portuguese climate.

Serra da Estrela, PortugalYou can read more about this very special place in our article about Serra da Estrela which also has a lot to offer out of the winter season when it´s most popular for skiing, snowboarding and fire place accompanied logding and local gastronomy here

In Porto it likes to rain in Porto in the winter but the city is beautiful and natural when it does. Generally it clears up fast and than the warm winter sun dries the surroundings with a steamy haste.
It’s a wonderful city, that switches from sun to rain and back fast making for magnificent skies and fantastic beach walks. This is probably the best time of year to taste the warm making Port wines in front of a wood fire after long walks in the city or surrounding country side.

Faro and the Algarve. Faro and the Algarve get the most sun hours in Portugal as it’s the most southern point of Portugal, close to Morocco. Don’t expect to swim as the sea is wild and very cold in the winter, do expect eating out, walking on beaches and warm sunny days accompanied by fresh cooler sea breezes.
