Cafe Luso, Fado & Food, Lisbon

Café Luso is a fado house with a restaurant. With its plant in the effervescent Bairro Alto, it is located in the old wineries and stables of Palácio Brito Freire, which resisted the earthquake of 1755.

The majestic marble columns confirm the foundations and denote the patina that gives it dignity.
From the arched structure of vaulted ceilings, in stone and brick, a unique acoustics result.
The Fado sessions begin at 8:00 p.m. and runs until 2:00 a.m. with intermissions, ideal for reestablishing the conversation and moving in space.

The performances of Fado take place in the noble area of the enclosure, to the center of the room; The curtains are closed, the light is low, it acts in an environment of proximity and recollection that involves musicians and clients.

Large room, with capacity for 160 seats, plus a stage where there are also tables. This position gives Customers a privileged perspective on the room.

Of the most dated decorative heritage is the ceramic panels of Mestre Ferreira da Silva (60’s) and, more recently, the paintings by Norberto Nunes.

In the genesis of the concept, Fado is served with food. For this reason, this house of fado, of 1927, integrates the service of restaurant.

The Luso Café space, parallel to the restaurant room, is elegant with bar service.

It has Fado decoration in close connection with historical images of Café Luso.

It is a pleasant place to welcome the customers of the restaurant and overlooks the street.

Since Fado is reserved for the mother house, the decorative environment obeys this theme.

It can be a gathering place that invites you to long conversations, reserving the option of later going to Café Luso for a night of fado.

Timpanas Fado restaurant, Lisbon

Timpanas – Fado & Food Group
History
It was the year 1961 when a carpentry shop was transformed into a Fado house.

This circumstance, to celebrate the anniversary of Mercês da Cunha Rego, a fadista who achieved success with one of the classic themes most appreciated at the time, “Cavalo Russo”, by Paulo Vilar and Frederico Valério, determined the opening of this new fado house in Lisbon.

The name Timpanas had a direct inspiration in Leitão de Barros’ phonofilm, in which the actor Silvestre Alegrim interprets a boy, “King of the Traquitanas”, who, whistling, with a revolutionary hat to the patuleia and pilecas attached to the tipoia.

The most revered themes in Fado are Love and Saudade, in which the same theme is multiplied by different versions based on the same melodic and / or lyrics, stylized according to the interpreter.

The Fado, especially the most vernacular fado, came mainly from the districts of Lisbon. Influenced by reminiscences of singers in bailaricos, pilgrimages, retreats, taverns and conviviality among residents, the players and singers were investigating the differentiating and entrenched features of fado, which mirror the experiences of each neighborhood.

Traditionally, fadistas wear black robes, but also showy colors and sequins, the shawls that emphasize the drama of interpretation, the lavish fact, the poses posed and the gestures small but expressive.

In the first phase of Timpanas’s existence, in the light of the olive-oil lamps, respectfully, besides the Duarte Family, the generations of Handymen, with Ti Alfredo to the head, other notable voices and guitarists were heard: D. Maria Teresa de Noronha, accompanied by Dr. Menano, Francisco Maia Stoffel, Teresa Tarouca, Maria do Rosário Bettencourt, Mariana Silva, Júlio Proença, José Pracana and João Ferreira Rosa, among others,

The Timpanas is part of one of the most charismatic districts, where the greatest number of spaces where fado was sung was recorded, thanks to the profusion of people that made it expand from the end of the 19th century and at the dawn of the 20th century, above all linked to fishing and factory activities.

At Timpanas the tradition is carried on accompanied by food and drink it makes for a typical Lisbon experience. The price for the performances are integrated in the meal prices, as it is in most fado houses in Lisbon.
For group menu’s and possibilities, please call us or use the following form. menu prices including fado, dance and drinks start at 40 Euro per person.

Duetos da Sé, Alfama, Lisbon

The Duetos da Sé is the perfect place in this bustling, lively area for small events, dinner, petiscos (Tapas) and music venues for groups of up to 45 people.

By alleys and narrow streets
As far as the eye can reach,
I embrace with excitement
The gentle and wild soul of those who live here.

Alfama calls for me
And insists on telling long ago History.

Sung banns,
Neighbours peeping out.
Memory from the land,
Memory from the sea.

(…) There, by the Sé …
– Neighbor ?! Have you heard?
There are new people in the quarter,
In the Travessa do Almargem,
Where sweethearts have fallen in love and got engaged.

The windows half-opened,
The matriarches call the children for dinner
And all the sounds bleed into one.

Carlos Lala, a man of vision,
He has grown wings and is making his dream come true.

There, by the Sé,
Alfama is before one’s eyes.
If you come across The Duets, please come in!
Rest,
Let yourself inebriate with the sounds,
And have a drink with pleasure …

All this,
In The Duets, in Alfama!
(of course …)

Restaurant Sete Saias, Nazare

[tab name=”Information”]
Nazare is an old fishing village on the west coast of Central Portugal. It’s a village which has grown into a small town but it has always kept it’s village traditions, very proudly, up to this day.
The town has gained international fame thanks to it’s high surfing waves which on a Northern beach above Nazare, “Praia do Norde” reached the highest waves ever surfed and created a new world record held by Hawaiian surfer Garrett McNamara in 2014.

Nazare is a surfers paradise but it’s also a very nice place for a family beach holiday on the beaches south of the “praia do Norde”.

One of the first really good restaurants we found in Nazare has the name of a tradition that exists only in Nazare and it is the tradition of the “Sete Saias” which means seven petticoats. The traditional woman in Nazare still wear these and you’ll meet them everywhere selling traditional beans called Tremoco or in winter castanje, eating with each other at traditional restaurants or walking together on the streets. Others own restaurants or have apartments for rent.
These where the woman who stayed behind when the husband went fishing, they made a life on the land until their husbands returned, if they returned.
They wore seven petticoats which translates to “Sete saias” because winters in Nazare can be cold and it’s a tradition that has made Nazare very famous.

The restaurant pays homage to it’s name and this still existing tradition as the owner wears the petticoats with an unquestioned and proud prevelance.

The restaurant serves fresh fish straight from the sea as well as many well known Portuguese meat dishes. It’s not a coastline restaurant with a view of the beach but for the locals it’s the place to eat when you want something special and don’t care to much about the view. The food is excellent as is the menu. The restaurant is very nicely decorated, staff is great and ambience authentic. Place to visit and an authentic local, place to eat!
