Wine tasting & wine tours Lisbon

We love Portuguese wine, wine districts and wine culture. It’s production and consumption are as inherent of the Portuguese society as it is of the French.
Currently Portugal is starting to gain more & more international attention for its wines and this we are very pleased about as Portuguese wines are both unique, diverse and excellent and no wine lover should skip the opportunity to get to know them and Go on at least one discovery of Portuguese wines on their trip to Portugal!

Some wines are already known obviously the fortified Port wines are known worldwide followed by the related Douro wines, the Alentejo wines and the Northern Vinho Verde wines but Lisbon is surrounded by wines districts and has its own production of excellent examples, wine bars and wine producers where one can get to know some of the best.

Just above Lisbon starts the Tagus valley and few know that this area is considered the home of the first vineyards in Iberia, planted around 2000bc by the Tartessians who inhabited Spain during this period. The Tejo region, still an important wine producing area of Portugal consists of large flat valley that receive much rain during the winter months making the grapes very suitable for large production table wines but on the drier slopes surrounding the river some very distinctive wines of quality are also being produced.

Closer to Lisbon at roughly 30km is a place set on the west coast slopes that produces a magical grape. It is the area of Colares close to the UNESCO heritage town of Sintra. why magical? For one the area is so beautiful it could take your breath away, Sintra set in the higher hills is the former home of many former kings and Portuguese royalty and its high amount of magical palaces made it world heritage visited by many on their discoveries of Portugal. But this is not the main reason for its magic, it is actually the grape used to produce the wine which is the only original European grape left after the phylloxera louse wiped out all European vines. The Colares Ramisco grape grabbed its roots deep in the sandy Colares soils and was spared because of it.
