Vila de Rei has many river beaches of which Pego das Cancelas is one of the nicer ones. It is situated in rural surroundings close to the village of Sao Joao do Peso. The beach is cultivated on the small river Ribeira da Isna 13km north of Vila do Rei.
It has both sand, grass and brick water fronts and the river has sandy ground. There is plenty of sun spots for sunbathing but also many shaded areas.
There are also a barbecue available for those who want to grill on the beach.
The river has a shallow area where children can swim safely under your guidance and it has a larger deeper area for diving.
It’s a beautifully situated beach, close to the more famous Roman bridge of the 3 districts, Vila de Rei, Sertã e Mação built between the first and fourth century and reconstructed in the 13th and 14th century (Ponte dos 3 Concelhos) in a valley in the mountains north of Vila de Rei.
A place of long time ago habitation, unequalled ‘natural nature’ mixed tastefully with modern day cultivation! Also a place to relax, take in the view, cool down while swimming in the waters and enjoy the terrace for drinks or snacks.
For us Central Portugal is comparable to the Dordogne of France but different………It’s Portugal and It’s just as beautiful, it has the same amount of awe inspiring nature, sport, culture and history, for now it’s less visited making It the perfect place, not yet over-run by tourism and worth to Discover!
Finding the beach is not difficult as there are signs that will guide you there.
