Autumn, also known as fall in North America is a very specific season to visit Portugal as it is a very unique time. The landscapes start to recover, the people are more rested and the climate pleasant following the immense summer heat that covers Portugal every summer between May and September. It is truly a great period to go to Portugal and discover its immense beauty without the stress of the burning sun but the pleasures of the warm sun!

Autumn is the time of flowers and green unlike most European countries where flowers vanish and landscapes turn orangy brown, Portugals yellowy dried summer landscapes start to bloom during the autumn. You will Roses, wild and cultivated, trees in full bloom, orange tree blossoms and many other flower species that take over the views and create perfect surroundings for hikes and visual adventures.

The climate
Warm and mild typifies the autumn / fall climate in Portugal, wet days will become more frequent as the days towards Christmas come closer and the nights will slowly get colder over the weeks after the end of September.

September is the time to visit the wine quintas and take part in the harvest of the grapes, still warm and before the rain, September is the month the grapes are harvested all over Portugal and the wine farm are bustling with excited activity.

October: start of the first light rain showers alternated by sunny warm afternoons. The waters start to cool down and grow larger, the landscapes recover and color many shades, flowers pop up everywhere.

In November the white water river Paiva close to Porto regains its powers and white water rafting and canoeing activities become once again available.

In December the bustle of Christmas creates a shoppy, foodie Christmas atmosphere all over Portugal, the entire month is dedicated to shopping, celebrations and culinary activities!
