The Tejo valley is one of the most fertile regions of Portugal starting just above Lisbon , it covers the area around the Tejo, Tagus river north of Lisbon city.

The region was the first region in Portugal cultivated for the production of wine 2000 years BC and has a rich diverse landscape, incorporating mountainous areas, large stretched valleys and hilly shores. The area was once the main stronghold of the Moors  and later against the Moors and it was an active route for trade and pilgrimage. Much of it´s history is still evident in the many remaining fords and castles.

The district is not touristic, yet it has all the aspects necessary to provide for a perfect holiday, vacation or short get away.

The Tejo produces many wines and has a rich and unique gastronomy just waiting for discovery. This article covers some of the  most atmospheric restaurants and taverns we have found here. We hope they will interest you on your road to Discovery!

FIrst of all this little tavern in the small town of Limeiras, roughly 10 km from Tomar. The tavern is more than 100 years old and has been in the same family since the beginning, it consist of 3 rooms and an internal terrace Tasca Ti Lopez scores high on the level of authentic ambiance especially in it´s dining room where on reservation you can enjoy typically local petiscos!

 Restaurante D. José Pinhão in Constância is a gorgeous local and excellent restaurant that scores high on the ambiance meter, set in a lovely old restored building, right in the historical center of the small town of Constância it has been run by the same owner for many years and has earned itself a strong reputation for great regional and traditional food, where dining stops being eating and becomes a worthwhile experience!

Another dining experience, also in the small town of  Constancia, can be had at the 15th century manor house, Quinta de Santa Barbara. Currently in use as a hotel the Quinta has a restaurant well worth a visit. more info >>>

On the east side of the Tagus on the main Tejo wine route, you´ll find a small town called Pinheiro. Pinheiro is one of those lovely places, where time seems to stand still and the only point of activity that you´ll find in this town is the very successful regional restaurant Taberna da Rita. Consisting of an old building with various rooms set around a small courtyard this restaurant is just a perfect stop for Ribatejan food, wins and hospitality. more info >>>

10kms from Taberna da Rita, you will find another absolute atmospheric great! Poizo O Besouro in the interesting town of Chamusca. Poizo O Besouro is again a restaurant for regional excellence, busy that makes dining more than a culinary experience but an experience that in-cooperate the enjoyment of good food, comfortable surroundings and historical reference!
