Portugal, a country full of fast changing mountainous landscapes, canyons, rivers and a long beachy/cliffy coastline, has been a favourite destination for climbers, hikers and climbing adventures for decades.
With the growing popularity of extreme sports and rural discoveries some exiting new sports have emerged that will set your adrenaline levels raising as you discover some wonderful landscapes you would otherwise never get to see!
Canyoning in short is the term used to describe the activity of climbing and descending through natural canyons often with the use of ropes and abseils.
Coastering is based on the same principle but it is done along the cliff coastline and consist of climbing and descending the rocky walls along the shore.
Both activities are WET activities as you will jump into the water, wade and swim through the water before returning to the higher grounds.
Both canyoning and coastering are accessible to all ages (you need to be able to swim) and are provided in various levels of difficulty depending on the prior experience and physical capacity of the participants. This makes it a perfect activity for families as well as extreme sport practitioners.
In Portugal there are various places that provide Canyoning mostly based in the North of Portugal where there are the best canyons in the mainland and on the Islands, the Azores and Madeira.
Coastering is possible in the Algarve and 30KM from Lisbon, in the natural park of Arrabida, canyoning and coastering are safe sports when conducted by a professional instructor who understands the landscape perfectly.
Canyoning and coastering are very popular team activities, great for bachelor and hen do’ s and a fantastic way to spend and exiting day with your family!
Another great climbing activity that is organized not far from Lisbon but is less suitable for the faint-hearted is spelunking or as some call it caving or potholing. Conducted in the caves of the Arrabida natural park spelunking consist of medium to hard level descents into the caves. It consist of rope climbing for experienced climbers or a full day coarse for beginners of good physical constitution. The level of difficulty is adjusted to the participants but the fear factor for most is the descent into the dark of a cave!
