Concepts to Festivalize Your Event: The Desert Arts Festival
Desert arts festivals have become one of the defining cultural movements of the last few decades: temporary worlds built around large-scale art, participation, creativity, community, and the idea that everyone contributes something to the experience.
Go Discover Portugal brings that spirit into the corporate event – not as a replica of a desert festival, but as a flexible format built around its most powerful ideas: create rather than consume, participate rather than watch, and leave the event having built something together.
The result can be anything from a full open-landscape festival in Comporta or the Alentejo to a scaled-down installation experience on your hotel grounds or at a city venue.
The Desert Arts Festival
At the heart of the format is one simple idea: nobody just watches.
Your group moves through a landscape of interactive installations, creative workshops, challenges, music, food, and social spaces. Teams contribute to a shared piece of art or experience throughout the day, with everything building towards a final ceremony as the sun goes down.
The finale might be a light installation, a sound-and-visual performance, or the unveiling of the completed structure. Where a venue’s own fire safety arrangements allow it, this can also include a symbolic fire element – something we confirm venue by venue, since most properties require advance sign-off for anything involving open flame.
The point is not the spectacle itself. It is the feeling of having created it together.
Built On Creation, Not Just Roleplay
Where the Medieval Fair asks your group to step into another world, the Desert Arts Festival asks them to build one.
That difference makes it particularly powerful for team building. The connection comes not from watching a performance, but from making decisions, solving problems, creating something tangible, and seeing your contribution become part of a larger whole.
Art From Reclaimed Materials
Teams receive a creative brief and a collection of materials such as wood, fabric, rope, or other reclaimed elements, then design and build a piece that becomes part of the final installation.
Performance Building
Small groups create a short piece for the closing ceremony – anything from spoken word or a chant to a visual performance or short theatrical moment. The structure makes creativity accessible even to people who would never normally volunteer for the stage.
Team-Designed Challenges
Each team creates a mini-challenge or experience for another team. Instead of simply completing an activity, they have to think about what makes an experience engaging, fair, surprising, and memorable.
Music & Sound
Teams contribute to a collaborative soundtrack, create a simple sound installation, or work with musicians to build the atmosphere of the festival.
Flags, Banners & Identity
Teams create a visual identity representing their department, product, market, or shared ambition – a simple, tactile way to turn corporate identity into something people can actually make and own.
The creative process naturally brings other skills to the surface. Someone takes the lead on design. Someone else solves the practical problem. Someone pitches the idea. Someone quietly makes sure it actually works.
And because every team’s contribution ultimately becomes part of one shared environment, the story is bigger than any individual challenge: we made this together.
How Do We Adapt The Desert Arts Festival For A Corporate Group?
Your festival can take place on the grounds of your hotel, at a purpose-built venue, or in a more expansive landscape such as Comporta, the Alentejo, or Ribatejo.
A Ceremony Master introduces the story and keeps the experience moving, while your group explores the different zones, creative stations, installations, and social spaces.
For a more bespoke experience, we build the festival around a specific corporate objective.
Product Launch: The Installation Reveal
Instead of presenting the new product from a stage, the entire festival builds towards discovering it.
- The Collaborative Installation: Teams contribute individual pieces to a large-scale structure throughout the day, with each contribution representing a product feature, market, customer, or business unit.
- The Missing Piece: The final component is kept secret until the closing moment – with the product itself becoming the missing piece that completes the installation.
- The Reveal: At dusk, the completed structure lights up, opens, moves, or transforms to reveal the product.
- The Manifesto: Teams then share what the new product means for their part of the business, turning a product presentation into a collective statement about where the company is going.
Leadership Offsite / Culture Reset: Leave It Behind
A festival built around creation and transformation provides a natural framework for a leadership reset – a symbolic, facilitated group exercise, not a therapeutic one.
- What We Leave Behind: Individuals or teams identify behaviours, assumptions, habits, or ways of working they’d like to move on from.
- The Release: These are placed into a shared structure that becomes the centrepiece of the closing ceremony.
- The Transformation: At sunset, the structure is transformed through light, sound, or projection – or, where the venue’s own fire safety arrangements allow, a symbolic flame element, confirmed with the property in advance.
- The New Constitution: Teams then define the principles, behaviours, and ambitions they want to carry forward, creating a new installation or visual statement for the organisation.
Sales Kick-Off: The Gifting Economy
Take the idea of exchange and generosity and turn it into a playful alternative to the traditional sales competition.
- Earn Your Gifts: Teams complete challenges connected to sales priorities, product knowledge, collaboration, or real business objectives to earn tokens, materials, or “gifts”.
- The Trading Post: Rather than simply accumulating points, teams must decide what to give, trade, share, or exchange with others.
- The Collaboration Challenge: Some resources can only be unlocked through cooperation between teams, creating reasons to collaborate rather than compete.
- The Final Gift: The team that has contributed most to the wider festival – rather than simply collected the most – is invited to lead the closing ceremony.
How To Structure The Corporate Desert Arts Festival
To make the experience work for a large and varied group, we divide the space into distinct zones – each with its own energy and purpose.
The Playa
The central gathering space for the main installation, executive moments, performances, and closing ceremony.
The Gifting Post
A social hub for exchanging tokens, local products, food, drinks, and unexpected discoveries – designed to encourage informal interaction between teams.
The Art Trail
A route through smaller installations and creative interventions, giving participants space to explore, discover, photograph, and have quieter one-to-one conversations.
The Workshop Camp
The hands-on making zone, where teams build, paint, construct, rehearse, and contribute to the festival’s central installation.
Why This Works For Your Objectives
High Retention
People forget another presentation about transformation. They remember helping build the installation that transformed in front of them at sunset.
Natural Inclusivity
The festival offers different ways to participate. Makers can build at the Workshop Camp, social personalities can thrive at the Gifting Post, performers can take the stage, while quieter participants can explore the Art Trail or contribute behind the scenes.
Seamless Alignment
The format gives almost any corporate message a physical metaphor. A product becomes the missing piece. A culture reset becomes a release. Collaboration becomes an exchange. A new strategy becomes something the group physically builds together.
It is something the group made.
