Concepts to Festivalize Your Event: The Medieval Fair

Lisbon · Porto · Algarve · Nationwide

Festivalization is one of the most powerful ways to add a storyline to your event in Portugal – a theme built to entertain, educate, train, or simply bond and fascinate your crew.

Medieval fairs are a beloved tradition across Europe, and especially on the Iberian Peninsula, where they celebrate our shared history and reconnect people with local culture and traditions in a genuinely entertaining setting. Activity, food, performance, and role play all combine into one strong, immersive storyline.

These fairs are so popular many will spend their summers traveling from one to the next, dressed up and role playing all the way.

Go Discover Portugal now brings a version of this activity to the corporate group as a way to create an immersive experience that fascinates and creates lasting memories dedicated to your group and built around your objectives.

Corporate groups respond to festivalization for a simple reason: it replaces passive attendance with active participation. A single-format event, however well run, asks the same thing of everyone in the room – watch, listen, applaud. A festivalized one gives each person a role to step into, whether that’s haggling at a market stall, watching a joust unfold, or taking a turn in a period costume. That variety means the day works for the whole group at once, not just the people who happen to enjoy whatever the one activity on offer happens to be. And because the format is built around a real story rather than a loose schedule, it becomes something people actually remember and talk about afterward, not just another offsite that blurs into the last one.

The Format

The Medieval Fair

In medieval times, the medieval fair would be the highlight of any season. A place to socialise, trade, present local produce, be amazed by a multitude of entertainers and play typical medieval games, some which have been close to forgotten and now reinvented. Our fair uses aspects of each, running the visitors through Portugal’s rich history, entertaining with typical bobos da corte (jesters), fire breathers, and traditional gaita-de-foles bagpipers, feeding with stands that introduce local produce and drinks.

Bringing It To Your Event

How Do We Corporatise Our Event?

For a bonding team building event, the event by itself can be enough. Your group will be introduced to the fair on the grounds of your hotel or location of choice. A Ceremony Master in medieval custom will provide an introduction and your teams can then rotate through the games, the food stands, and watch our entertainers as they provide performances throughout the event.

For a more bespoke experience built around your objectives, we design a fitted solution that replaces a standard corporate presentation with active, immersive storytelling. Here is how we can integrate a specific corporate objective into the fair:

01

Product Introduction: The Guild’s Secret Weapon

Forget the standard slideshow. We frame your new product as a groundbreaking invention or a highly guarded secret from the medieval guilds that will revolutionize the marketplace.

  • The Quest for the Artifact: Divided into rival merchant guilds, teams must trade, solve riddles, and complete challenges across the fairgrounds to earn the keys or seal rings needed to see the product first.
  • The Reveal Ceremony: Your executive team takes the role of high royalty. Alongside our Master of Ceremonies, they host a theatrical unveiling, revealing the product from a locked iron chest surrounded by trumpeters and fire performers.
  • The Town Crier Pitch: After the reveal, teams are challenged to create their own medieval “Town Crier” style pitch to market the new product to the fair, driving home its key selling points in a humorous, memorable way.
02

Corporate Merger: The Alliance of the Two Kingdoms

Mergers can bring anxiety, but festivalization frames the transition as a grand, celebratory alliance of two historic territories joining forces to create a market superpower.

  • The Royal Treaty: The event kicks off with a dramatic enactment where the leaders of both legacy companies sign a “tapestry treaty” or blend two distinct Portuguese wines into a single goblet to symbolize the union.
  • Forging the New Crest: Teams are intentionally mixed with members from both companies. Their objective is to visit the “Heralds” station to design a new coat of arms that blends the cultures, values, and strengths of both organizations.
  • The Tournament of Unity: Instead of competing against one another, the newly combined teams work together in traditional games like archery and catapult building to score points for the collective Empire, proving they are stronger together.
03

Sales Kick-Off: Conquering New Territories

Sales kick-offs thrive on high energy, competition, and clear targets. The medieval fair provides the perfect backdrop for a campaign of expansion.

  • The Map of the Realm: The main event space features a massive, stylized medieval map of Portugal or your global market territories, where target regions are marked as “unconquered lands” or “besieged castles.”
  • Earning the Siege Weapons: Teams compete in skill-based challenges to earn resources, gold, and parts to build a functioning mini-catapult.
  • The Final Assault: The event culminates in a grand finale where teams use their catapults to launch projectiles at targets representing their sales quotas. Hitting the target symbolises “breaking through” and conquering the market for the upcoming year.
The Layout

How to Structure the Corporate Medieval Fair Space

To make these concepts work on your hotel grounds or chosen venue, we organize the space into interactive zones that cater to different personality types within your crew:

Zone

The Royal Court

The central hub for executive speeches, product reveals, and awards.

Zone

The Tavern & Stalls

A relaxed space to network over local Portuguese wine, cheeses, and casual roleplay.

Zone

The Tournament Field

The high-energy zone for archery, catapult building, and active team bonding games.

Zone

The Guild Square

A quieter, tactical area dedicated to strategy, crest making, and solving riddles.

The Payoff

Why This Works for Your Objectives

High Retention

People easily forget data points delivered from a stage; they never forget the time they built a catapult with the VP of Finance to hit a sales target.

Natural Inclusivity

The variety of the layout means the day works for the whole group at once. Introverts can enjoy strategic riddle-solving at the Guild Square, while extroverts can cheer on the tournament field.

Seamless Alignment

The historical roleplay naturally mirrors your corporate dynamics – guilds become departments, kingdoms represent your markets, and the crown signifies the company mission.
