Fado is the cultural heritage of Portugal recognised as UNESCO world heritage it is the music of the people that has survived the generations.

There are 2 main types of Fado the Lisbon fado and the Coimbra fado both have their very specific styles and rules.

Lisbon fado is the music of the people. The fishermen from the past, the hard-working women of the Lisbon neighborhoods, the people dealing with their everyday struggles and celebrations. The music of love, tragedy, and all emotions. 

Even today, with its massive popularity in the tourist neighborhoods of Lisbon, the local people still sing fado in their doorways, in the street, and in the traditional cafes for themselves and for each other.

Fado in our modern society is as much alive and part of the culture as bacalhau, red wine and pastries and no visit to Lisbon is complete without getting at least a small taste of it.
