The Hotel Convento Nossa Senhora do Carmo is a wonderfully peaceful and cultural hotel that will take you straight into the history of the south Douro region of Portugal with an amazing feeling of elegance, introspection and tranquillity that belongs to the atmosphere of such an old convent.
Quoted on Tripadvisor as a wonderful stay to discover the Douro region, we can only back this.
The convent was build in the early 18th century as a place where the less fortunate of the society, specifically their daughters, received education and guidance. It was closed at a later date much to the dismay of the local people.
The convent is located on the shores of the lovely Távora damming, that has created a wonderful lake, the barragem of Vilar, used for swimming, fishing, canoeing, sailing and other water sports and it is the only lake in the southern Douro region.
Today, the Convent properly recovered, restored and adapted, transformed into a beautiful and comfortable country hotel, where tourists and businessmen can enjoy the warmth of stay, enjoy the gastronomic experience and the lovely parish and its surrounding landscapes.
Its 60 cells gave rise to 24 rooms. The former convent chapel has been rehabilitated into a much loved gastronomic restaurant.
The exterior has a large leisure area to enjoy the sun, swim in the pool and enjoy the peaceful sound of the singing birds.
THe hotel is situated in the small village of Freixinho on the shores of the Barragem do Vilar in the southern Douro region, 50km from Viseu, 70km from Guarda and roughly 80km from the national park of Douro.
