The Palace traces back to 1877, when the Count of Valenças transformed a house in Lisbon’s Lapa district into a residence decorated by two of Portugal’s great 19th-century artists: ceramist Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro, who created custom furniture and tiles, and portraitist Columbano, who painted the ceiling and walls of the original ballroom, now the Columbano Room. The Count’s tower, built to take in views over Lisbon and the Tagus, still stands today as part of the Tower Room.
The family sold the Palace in 1988, and after a five-year restoration that carefully preserved the original architecture, including a national heritage aqueduct discovered in the basement mid-construction, it opened to the public as a hotel in 1992. Original stained-glass windows, period furniture and 170-year-old carpets remain in place in several rooms today, giving guests a genuine sense of the Palace’s aristocratic past rather than a themed recreation of it.

The hotel’s 109 rooms and suites are spread across three distinct sections: the original Palace wing, the Garden wing, and Villa Lapa, a newer wing added in 2002 with 12 rooms and 2 suites, each with a balcony overlooking the gardens. The 21 rooms of the original 1870 Palace, along with the Suite Count of Valenças, were fully redecorated with Portuguese-made furniture in styles ranging from Art Deco to Colonial, Algarvian and Neo-Classic, so no two rooms in the Palace wing look quite the same. The Suite Count of Valenças and five further deluxe rooms occupy the Palace’s noble fifth floor, restored with furniture and mirrors recovered from the original residence. Every room throughout the hotel features Vista Alegre porcelain, Portugal’s historic porcelain house founded in 1824.
