Chapter One
A Playground Above the Clouds

Where royalty came to escape

Portuguese royalty summered in Sintra as far back as the Middle Ages, drawn to its cooler hills and spring-fed forests. By the 19th century the town had become the fashionable escape of Europe’s aristocrats, diplomats and writers, who built extravagant summer palaces into the hillsides above the town. Its poetic, overgrown grandeur inspired travelling Romantics of the era, who returned home describing Sintra as a paradise on earth.

In 1995, UNESCO inscribed the Cultural Landscape of Sintra as a World Heritage Site, recognising it as Europe’s first great work of Romantic landscape architecture, an entire hillside shaped by kings, noblemen and dreamers into one continuous garden of follies, palaces and hidden retreats.

Chapter Two
Before the Kings

Moorish walls, older gods

Long before the palaces, Sintra’s highest ridge was already sacred ground. In antiquity its peak was known to Roman writers as the Mountain of the Moon, a site of pre-Roman cult worship where local Lusitanian and Celtic tribes are believed to have honoured lunar and solar deities among the granite outcrops.

The Moors fortified that same ridge in the 8th and 9th centuries, raising the Castelo dos Mouros whose walls still trace the skyline today. When Christian forces took the castle in 1147, they inherited a landscape already layered with centuries of ritual and belief, a foundation the town’s later mystics and noblemen would build on, quite literally, stone by stone.

Chapter Three · The Heart of the Mystery

In 1904, the wealthy bibliophile Carvalho Monteiro commissioned Italian architect and set designer Luigi Manini to build him a private estate unlike any other in Portugal. What emerged was not simply a palace and garden, but a landscape of allegory. Grottoes connect to tunnels, tunnels connect to towers, and terraces are carved with the symbols of alchemy, the Knights Templar and Freemasonry.

At its centre lies the Initiation Well, a spiral staircase sunk nine stories into the earth, its landings marked with a compass rose and the symbols of the Tarot’s Major Arcana. Local tradition holds it was used for private initiation ceremonies, a descent into darkness followed by a walk through hidden tunnels toward the light. Carvalho Monteiro’s own library and correspondence reveal a documented fascination with Rosicrucianism, esoteric philosophy and the mythology of the Templars, all of it woven into the garden’s stonework for those who know how to read it.
