Taverna D’Talha, Tavern Tomar

Taverna D'Talha medieval tavern Tomar

For a really nice tavern Tomar experience, The Taverna D’Talha is a recently opened new tavern in the center of Tomar. It’s a ‘typical’ tavern with a modern, innovative medieval theme in which much attention has been given to detail!

The Taverna D’Talha is situated just of the Praca Republica in a lovely medieval part of the historical center which was once the Jewish neighbourhood of Tomar. The tavern was a living space in medieval times and has 2 tunnels which once connected the houses in this district to each other. Possibly these where used by the Jewish community in the time of the inquisition when they needed to practise their faith in secret, not enough is known yet about the history but it seems a viable explanation. In the Taverna Talma these tunnels have been kept and framed with resistant glass, so they can be viewed.

The taverns main theme are the Ginjinha traditional Portuguese liquer which is drunk in shots served in clay cups (see also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ginjinha ) and the local Tomar drink Bebida Mouchão dos Templários. Beer and wine are also served as are medieval style petiscos, chocolate and snacks.

It’s a very, very nice place with a really nice Templars theme. Not tourist trappy , just a friendly medieval tavern that fits perfectly in the Tomar atmosphere and ambience!
