5 important Tips on planning a succesful team building

Team building peddy paper tours, Lisbon

Organizing a team building might seem simple. You want to promote collaboration, team effort and it provides a good opportunity for your team to get to know each other better especially when often they work remotely or come from worldwide offices.

However the reality can be very different. When dealing with any group of people you may not know so well, you will have to take into consideration the individual characters of the team.

Religions, ages, personal differences and preferences should be considered if you want your team building to succeed.

Having handled such groups for many years we come across some really bad choices that could have been avoided had the organizers taking some aspects of team building into consideration. We hope the following article will help you make the best decisions when planning your event!

The first 5 tips to take into consideration.

  1. KNOW YOUR GROUP

One of the most important aspect of planning a team building is to know your group. Sounds logical but we have many request for team buildings from organizers that haven’t talked to their group or analyzed who they are and what they would like to do. This can be tragic when half your group cannot, don’t want to or simply refuse to take part in a team building you planned.

  2. Timings

How much time do you have and will the day be dedicated to team building. Often we receive requests from organizers with to much ambition. A 3 hour run through the city on a treasure hunt, a coasteering session, climbing or other adrenaline adventure might not be the best way to create stronger teams after a full day of conference when people are more into relaxation and leisure.

  3. competition or no competition.

A very important part when choosing a team building is the question of competition. Some groups thrive on challenging and competitive team building but in other situation it may actually work against what you are trying to achieve. Again thinking about your groups composition is important. Salespeople, marketing people and those with more competitive jobs may love the idea of competing against each other. they seem to naturally thrive in this environment. Your department of researchers may not necessarily have the same sentiments. Many people can feel exposed and uncomfortable competing against their colleagues, A competitive team building can in these situations be very counter productive.

  4. DONT REPEAT PAST MISTAKES

Be creative and do your research! Most companies are likely to organize at least one team building per year. Having to do the same thing over and over can be boring for most. Check with employees what team buildings they have done in the past and use the opportunity to enquire how they found these team buildings.

  5. Decide the goal of your team building.

Are there any issues within your company that need to be addressed? A team building can be a great way to innovate teams to work better together, overcome differences or thrive within a team. Knowing these issues can help when planning the perfect team building for your group.

Suggestions to help plan a winning team building event

At the end of the day after a congress or intensive meeting

Take into consideration your team may be mentally tired any activity is best to be relaxing or sporty depending on the group but maybe not mentally to challenging. Now its time to blow of some stress and have fun with each other.
Because its close to dinner why not incorporate a team building with a dinner, take a city tour but not a challenge or do a relaxing beach activity?

A half day or full day challenge?

Don’t take your teams to far out of their comfort zones. Nobody has ever proven that kicking your team out of an airplane tied to a parachute will make them better managers. Switch activities sport with culture, challenge with relaxation, provide breaks and some free time and leave people free to choose whether they will take part by providing alternatives.
