Location: The hilly city is located in the North of Portugal roughly 300KM from Lisbon and 100KM from the Spanish border. Centered around the Douro river and 6KM from the Atlantic ocean, the city gives access to the sea and the mountains of the Douro region.
History of Porto
History: The history of Porto goes as far back as the Celts but its main first references go back to the Romans who in the 4th century had established Porto as an important Port for trade between Lisbon and Braga, its original name was Port o Cal. It was occupied for a relatively short time by the Moorish from 711 to 868 but gained its modern importance in the 13th century for the trade of wines produced in the Douro region.
The climate
Climate: Porto climate is slightly cooler than the center and south of Portugal and it tends to receive the highest amount of rain during the winter months but there are many warm days even in the coldest months.
Summers tend to be dry and hot.
